We’ve Moved into the Season to Release and Let Go

We have entered into a new season and for many cultures we are also entering into a New Year. I have been meditating on what it will take to allow me to move into the future with expanded creativity, focus and awareness.

One of my favorite rituals at this time of year is the ritual of Tashlich…it is a symbolic releasing of our sins (meaning to go astray) into the water. What I love about it is the connection between our taking action to release, and the helping hand that comes from Spirit. As we move into action…spirit comes to help us. This year it is held on Monday Sept 30th.

Traditionally we throw small pieces of bread into moving water. This way the bread feeds the birds and fishes. Each piece represents the things that blind us to our own truth. We release anything that we have done by our words, deeds or actions that have harmed others or ourselves. We release our sense of inadequacy, our limiting viewpoints, and anything that has hardened our hearts. In fact, the biggest sin is the one of forgetting our own Divinity and connection to God. My Rabbi David Ingber calls it a ritual of scrubbing the soul clean.

Even if this is not in your tradition, I recommend you try this ritual.

  • Reflect on the past year and focus on the things that you are ready to cast off.

  • Take small pieces of bread and throw them into moving water. If you are not near water, take a bowl and throw them in the bowl.

  • Throw away the pain from the past.

  • Throw away the judgments that keep you from seeing the bigger picture.

  • Throw away the resentments and anger that keep your heart closed.

  • Throw away the “shoulds” and “coulds”.

  • Throw away the need to compare yourself to others.

  • Throw away anything that keeps you small and stuck.

Throw away any fear, anger or resentment you are holding about our upcoming election in the US.

“May your actions transform this world from a world of harshness to a world of compassion, from a world of ignorance to a world of enlightenment, from a world of death to a world of life renewed, and from a world where sin destroys us to a world where we destroy sin.” – Prayer Un’taneh Tokef

We’ve Moved into the Season to Release and Let Go.jpg

The following are essential in my journey:

Solitude: Really unplugging from the part of myself that can get distracted by the outside world…both good and bad

Time: To allow my creative artist/writer to emerge without pressure

Deep Spiritual Practice: This is what plugs me into the Divine Mind and lifts me up to expanded realities.

Compassion and Forgiveness: Softening my heart towards myself and others.

Letting Go: Releasing what no longer serves me and the “old stories” I cling to.

Belief in a Positive Future: Hope that will pull me forward no matter what the outer reality is.

Small Structured Action Steps: Building new neural pathways in my brain to allow my new foundation to be solid.

Joy and Fun: Freeing my spontaneous joyful child to think out of the box and enjoy life.

Knowing When to Ask for Help: We are co-creating this life together and each one of us has gifts and talents to share with others.

And on that note…we are looking for a wonderful new space to host VISION 2020 from January 17-19th. It would need to comfortably accommodate 40+ people and be close to public transportation. If you have any suggestions please send them to shakima@barbarabiziou.com.

Remaining Resilient in the Face of Adversity

My favorite thing to do in the summer is swim in the ocean, so the fact that I was asked to leave because of a Great White Shark sighting this weekend was disconcerting to say the least. Was this a Jaw’s Summer?

Strangely, no one seemed to panic. Everyone left the ocean and milled around the beach until the lifeguard said it was safe to swim again.

Then when I got back to my friend’s house in Brewster, we discovered that NYC had suffered a black out. Again, I was pleasantly surprised to see that most people were calm and dealing as well as could be expected in the hot humid weather. And many of the Broadway Shows took their music to the streets and played for the audiences that had to leave the theaters.

So how do we remain resilient in the face of adversity?

Pay attention and be present

Look at these roadblocks as temporary. This too shall pass is a good attitude that will allow you to remain hopeful that things will get better.

Find the joy in the present. Take a lesson from the cast of Hadestown, Come from Away and others who serenaded the crowds.

Breathe!!! Do what helps you bi-pass the stress signals in your brain.

Remember that our emotions are contagious. If we remain calm, it is easier for others to stay calm. Panic creates panic. Happiness creates more happiness.

Summer is Here!

“Set your life on fire! Seek those who fan your flames.” – Rumi

Okay, I admit it! I love doing fire rituals. Whenever I personally feel stuck or my loud inner critic begins to scream at me, I write down all the thoughts in my head and then light the paper with a match! These burnt offerings give me an instant sense of purification, transformation, completion, and peace.

Fire can heat us up, burn us down, or ignite and transform us like no other element. When out of control, fire is destructive; but when it’s contained, it can ignite our passions and fuel the highest forms of creativity. The ancients understood the extraordinary power of fire when they first discovered that this great element can cook food, weld steel, and even melt glass.

Have you ever felt dull? bored? As if nothing in your life was interesting or exciting? We all have times when things feel flat or look gray. As we move into the Summer Solstice, try this exercise to connect you to this amazing element and turn up the heat in your life.

Solar Power

Step One: Check a daily sunrise/sunset calendar for your current location. Go outside to watch the sunrise; if possible, place your bare feet on the ground or in grass while you’re watching.

Step Two: As you watch the rays of the morning sun, feel them activating your own heart flame (the sacred fire that lives inside your heart). Allow a feeling of warmth and vitality to fill you up. Sense the expansion of your heart.

Step Three: Now, imagine that this powerful sunlight is moving into every aspect of your life—into your relationships, your projects, and your deepest longings and wildest dreams. Feel the element of fire continue to illuminate your heart like the sun illuminates the Earth.

Step Four: As you go about your day, imagine that you can focus the radiance of the solar light you absorbed into any situation that you face. Imagine beaming your radiant light into the hearts and minds of anyone who needs it.

Stop Living in Your past Story!

As I was working with my new Gyrotonic’s Trainer, I felt my body tense up. I was recovering from a back injury and my body was fearful.

“It is a process” Martin said. “Be gentle with yourself. Your body is just remembering the past trauma, but it is not your current reality. It is only a memory.”

Wow, that resonated with me big time, since that is what I teach my clients in practice. Honor the past, but do not live there.

Are you living your past story or a new one that you are creating now?

Use this week to create a ritual to honor your old story and then let it go. You can write it down on a piece of paper and stamp it complete, burn it, shred it or write it on your tablet or computer and then press delete.

Even in the Bible it says, “And it came to pass…” It doesn’t say, “And it came to stay”. Life is about change and transition.

What Do You Need to Let Go Of?

Storytelling is the oldest ritual in the world and today I want to share one of my favorite ones with you.

Two monks were traveling together and came to a river with a very strong current. They began to cross to the other side, but they noticed a young woman trying to cross who needed help. She asked them to assist her.

The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman.

Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on with his
journey.

The younger monk couldn’t believe that the older monk had actually touched a woman. After walking for a few hours, he blurted out, “how could you have touched a woman when we are forbidden from having contact with any women?”

The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river, why are you still carrying her?”

How many of us are still carrying around past hurts, anger, sadness and resentment? Now is a time to choose to lighten up and move on without the heaviness of the past. You may be able to do this alone or you may need help, but I find that without letting go, the one we are really hurting is ourself.

You Become What Your Attention Is upon…

One of the most important things we can do during these times of chaos is to harmonize our own thoughts and feelings. Yes, we all know that the only person we can change is ourselves, yet we still insist on trying to control others without first focusing on ourselves.

Today I want to share with you a technique that I have practiced for over 25 years and have taught to thousands of people. It is a simple, yet powerful tool to gain mastery over your mind.

When you feel like you’re spinning out negative thoughts and emotions, it is your signal that the outer world is intruding to demand attention and it is in your power to command it to be silent.

As I have shared many times, whenever you qualify the words I AM , you set in motion the powerful presence of God. I AM is God in action.

Here is a powerful way to take control of your mind and bring harmony and balance into your life.
