Fasting and contemplation are a major part of my ritual on Yom Kippur. No matter where I am in the world, I stop and spend a day fasting and in prayer. I have learned that there is a power in stopping and in silence. It is time when I can get a new perspective on my current situation.
In fact, the idea for writing my books, The Joy of Ritual and The Joy of Family Rituals came out of a 3 day period of silence and fasting I did with my spiritual teacher Brugh Joy over 20 years ago.
Recently I read a blog by Suzanne Sabransky called The Mindfulness of Fasting (www.ritualwell.org). Here are some of the things that touched me.
“We take for granted that we have food to eat,
Unless we are among those who don't.”
We take for granted the quality of life we enjoy,
Unless it is lost, gone forever, a distant memory.
We take for granted all the blessings we have,
Unless we don't seem to have any to begin with.”
As I enter this New Year, I choose to be grateful for all that I have. Even though many plans I had were derailed, and my life has been a rollercoaster ride, I know deep in my heart that I am always guided if I take the time to really listen.
It is time for all of us to take stock of our lives before we move forward. My affirmation for this time is I RETHINK MY INTENTION AND RESHAPE MY FUTURE.
RITUAL OF NEW BEGINNINGS
1. Take some clay or play dough.
2. Create a symbol or figure that represents you.
3. Sit quietly and focus on things you want to create or change.
4. Visualize yourself with these new qualities.
5. Keep the symbol on your altar as a reminder of the New You.
