Everything You Do Makes a Difference

Last week we had a freak snow squall that seemed to come out of nowhere. Luckily, a taxi was passing as my friend Susan was trying to get uptown. She started to get in the cab when she heard a woman saying “taxi! taxi!”. Looking around she spotted a small elderly woman bundled up in a large coat. Without giving it a thought Susan reached out to the woman and invited her to get in and share the cab with her.

The woman lived on the far West Side of Manhattan and it took them an extra 20 minutes out of her way, but Susan couldn’t have cared less. And she refused to take any money from the woman.

Driving uptown she started chatting with the woman and asked her about her family and then asked her how old she was. The woman hemmed and hawed about wrinkles and old age and refused to say, but then shared that her birthday was on November 6th. My friend was stunned. Just that morning her daughter had said to her, “Since we are all having dreams about Grandpa (who had passed away in September),  I guess someone has to channel grandma”. Susan’s mother’s birthday was November 6th.

And it gets better.

As they got to the woman’s home, the cab driver said to Susan, “In all my years as a NY cab driver you are the nicest person I have ever had in my car. You make me want to be a better person”.  Then he got out of his cab, opened the back door and escorted the woman to her doorstep. Pretty unheard of in NYC.

Remember, everything you do or don’t do makes a difference and can change someone’s life. Let us embody this teaching into the coming decade. Ram Dass, one of the great spiritual teachers of our time has just passed on and totally lived this teaching. Let us honor him by doing the same.
